PM Lee Hsien Loong gave a speech during a Pre-U Seminar in NUS recently. He mentioned about the 4 challenges that Singapore faces.
Those 4 challenges are the need to upgrade the economy, create a strong education system, build a cohesive society and improve the urban living environment.
We can safely say that we have recovered from the economic crisis which happened last year. Still, there is a need to continue to upgrade the economy. The logic behind is simple, with an increase in GDP, there will be an increase in people’s income and they will have better standard of living which will help to push the economic to higher level as their purchasing power has increased and the cycle repeats. Yet, the challenge is in the doing. To bring our economy to a higher level, Mr Lee encourages foreign workers to be the part of this team. I believe it’s also because we have a limited population, with the help of foreign workers, our economy will increase. I believe he is trying to prepare us so that we won’t have uproar about foreigners stealing locals’ jobs.
Creating a strong education system is achievable, as we can see how the MOE is trying to strike a balance with our education system. There just have to be some minor changes to the current system to make much better.
We have celebrated our National Day every year without fail even if it rains. It’s one of our most joyous celebrations as we commemorate this day where we gain independence. This helps us to build a cohesive society to help maintain peace in our country which is one important key to a prosperous country.
