PM Lee outlines 4 key challenges for S'pore at Pre-U Seminar 2010

Quek Zhi Wei, Kathleen.

Singapore has gained its independence 45 years ago, 1965. Since then, Singapore is the world’s fourth leading financial centre, and its economy is often ranked among the world’s top ten most open, competitive and innovative. Singapore is also a highly cosmopolitan world city, with a key role in international trade and finance.

The 4 key challenges that PM Lee outlined are – Upgrade the economy, create a strong education system, build a cohesive society and improve the urban living environment.

Singapore’s economy is contributed mainly by the tourism industry, as well as other industries such as the manufacturing industry. We have recently built two Integrated Resorts (IRs) – Resort World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands. These resorts have facilities such as Universal Studios Singapore, as well as Casinos. By doing so, many tourists have actually specially make a trip down to Singapore to have a look at these resorts.

Personally, I feel that Singapore’s education system is already up to standard. As there are many students whom are complaining that they are stressed out, and are afraid that they will not be given any place in the local university. Many feel that it is unfair, as most of the students in the local university are foreign students. However, I do not feel this way, as I feel that these foreign students have gone through a lot in their life, and all they want is a better future and that they have realized this earlier than Singapore students. I personally feel that Singapore students are lazy, and spoilt.

Singapore already has a diverse populace of 5 million people made up of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Asians and Caucasians of various ethnic origins. Therefore, Singapore should focus on forging deeper bonds among Singaporeans of different races.

Singapore has taken the initiative to come up with campaigns such as Saving Gaia. By which, contestants are supposed to save as much electricity as they can. Winners get to walk away with prizes, as well as knowledge on saving the Earth, and improving urban living environment.
